Heinz Globitz, the shady hedge fund strategist, devises a lucrative scheme to convert the government’s unused nuclear waste repository into the consummate survival bunker. By selling occupation rights to nervous, super-rich families he more than satisfies his greedy needs as well as his debt to the Russian government.
Ultra-safe underground apartments and a small city are created in the 1,000-foot deep underground facility. Fifty highly vetted families and the necessary support staff are safe from catastrophic nuclear or electro-magnetic pulse attacks, biological contamination, pandemics, government revolution and economic and monetary collapse within the self-contained underground complex. With twenty years of provisions, his Yucca Mountain Sanctuary becomes a valued refuge when a doomsday asteroid impacts earth.
The Randall Merediths are some of the lucky ones to ride out the effects of the impact by the asteroid named 1989DP Onesimus. Boredom, temperaments, and underground confinement, however, become a problem despite a myriad of activities available in the unique bunker complex.
A problem develops that seals the Merediths and the other occupants in the Sanctuary, making it impossible to exit. Discovery of a narrow shaft offers some prospect of seeking help. If a few can endure claustrophobia while crawling up the long, tight-fitting shaft, they can get help to rescue the rest of the residents.
Tension and uncertainty provide an interesting outcome.
